More than 100 killed across Pakistan and Afghanistan as flash floods and heavy rains sweep the region
Unseasonal rainfall has affected Pakistan and Afghanistan, resulting in over 100 fatalities. Afghanistan reported 66 deaths and 36 injuries due to heavy rain and floods in 23 provinces. Approximately 600 animals perished, and over 1,200 houses were destroyed or damaged. In Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, 32 people died, while another 8 lost their lives in Balochistan. Numerous houses were destroyed or damaged in both regions. The heavy rainfall is unusual for this time of year, as Pakistan typically experiences monsoon season from June to September. Pakistan is highly vulnerable to climate change, despite contributing less than 1% of global emissions. The country has experienced extreme weather events such as heatwaves and floods in recent years.
