Once Bhutan reaches a ‘quota’ of 300,000 tourist arrivals, it may consider raising its Sustainable Development Fee, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay said. The fee was introduced in 2008 to manage the environmental impact of tourism on the country. Bhutan, known for its focus on Gross National Happiness rather than GDP, has a policy of “high value, low volume” tourism. The Sustainable Development Fee is one of the measures taken to ensure the sustainability of the tourism industry in Bhutan.
