Cars, sugar and cruises: How the Port of Baltimore closure could hurt the economy

The collapse of a bridge in Baltimore has disrupted the flow of ships in and out of the Port of Baltimore. The Key Bridge collapsed after a container vessel collided with one of its supports. As a result, vessel traffic has been suspended indefinitely, causing potential delays and congestion at alternative ports. Rerouting cargo to other ports could increase trucking and rail prices. Despite the disruptions, experts believe the impact on the overall US economy will be limited, as goods are likely to find other ports. The federal government has pledged support to get the port reopened.
